The January Barometer

Generally, as January goes so goes the year.

In fact, since 1950, whenever the C fund (S&P 500) closed up for the
month of January, the year closed up every year except for 3 (2001,
1994, 1966).

This year, the C fund closed up 5.2% for January. Wondering how other
years with similar January returns have fared?

1963 - January up 4.9%, year up 18.9%
1954 - January up 5.1%, year up 45%
1980 - January up 5.8%, year up 25.8%
1951 - January up 6.1%, year up 16.5%

In other words, despite the fact that this is usually the worst of the
four years of the Presidential election cycle, the odds are good that
this will be a positive year, and potentially, a very positive year.
